Local software developer awaits approval of patent

As an employee, how much would it be worth to you to have a vast volume of company information readily available by simply typing a word or two? As an employer, how much would you save by not being interrupted several times daily by employees asking questions? Local software developer Dave Tucker has developed just such a program called KnowItAll he feels will revolutionize the business and private world of information.

The basic concept of KnowItAll is simple. The owner of the program can add items of information to the system and create a keyword linking to particular pieces of information. Typing a keyword will bring up all the information on the system related to that word. If the information is too vast, the employee can narrow the search.

Here is an example. I am a new employee. On my first day, I need help with the phone system and I need to get all my paperwork into Human Resources. With the KnowItAll software and without bothering anyone else in the office I can type “phone” and get all the information I need. When I am finished, I can type “HR paperwork” and work right through my to-do list. I have worked my entire first day without bothering anyone.

This is not just for new employees. KnowItAll will continue to provide a paperless information pipeline for the existing employees based on the level of “rights” given to each employee by the “owner”. For example, KnowItAll can be set up to deliver sales updates to the sales staff or marketing information to the marketing staff with minimal time delay.

You can even use KnowItAll to create a binder of information for a presentation with minimal keystrokes.

This software is not just for the office; this product can even organize you at home. Let’s say you have a big, multi-documented home project. Our project will be a new garage on our house. I can put everything associated with this project in the KnowItAll system. Since the program can accept all types of media, I am able to scan in the proposals and blueprints, download the digital pictures and track the expenses in an Excel spreadsheet and create a list of contacts. Now if I have a question on where the electrical wires run, I type “garage pictures” and I can see where the wires are located on the finish project. Tucker developed KnowItAll in 2003 and released it to the market in June 2004. It is already a hit for several big businesses. KnowItAll helps educate new employees!

IJAMSVILLE — Sometimes one\'s future career turns out to be something you never thought of.

For Dave Tucker, his life began in Mexico where his parents were missionaries. He later returned there as a missionary himself, but found that career just wasn't for him. He had experience in the computer field and eventually founded www.Clip.com, which sells and maintains software he designed for lawn maintenance firms. "My brother-in-law owned a lawn maintenance firm in the area," he said from his office at 9639 Doctor Perry Road.

Since 1988, www.Clip.com grew from 300 to about 8,000 users in the "green industry," as Mr. Tucker calls it.

He said his software is designed to help businesses operate -- even when the executives aren't there.

Working with the "green" industry, he said landscapers and lawn care professionals now use cell phones, global positioning systems and even bar codes on signs on properties so they know exactly what maintenance to do. One of the recurring problems in his own office was that new employees were constantly interrupting him with questions, often about mundane things where the answer should have been easily found.

So he designed, and patented, KnowItAll.

The new software helps not only a business, but works well for a personal computer, as the user can put in information and set up a key word or words that can retrieve the information quickly.

Mr. Tucker demonstrated by showing how his employees ordered pizza. When the regular "pizza guy" was off and another employee was asked to order the food, everything went wrong. Mr. Tucker put into the office network the information on where pizza is normally ordered, the time for delivery or pick-up and employees even added their preferences on toppings.

Another example was for his bicycle. The shop where he purchased it offered some free maintenance, but required the purchase slip. "I knew if I took it home it could end up anywhere," he said. So he scanned the receipt into his KnowItAll system and uses key words like "bike" to retrieve the image and have it available for the shop. "It is a knowledge-based product, and instead of having to go through a lot of information to find what you really want, you simply use a key word and there it is," he said.

By installing the system, customers can find information faster and there is less need for technical help. "My tech support team went from five to two people, and the response time from 1 1 /2 hours to 12 minutes," he said. It helps new employees to get oriented sooner. "There is no time wasted in telling them how to find something, they just use key words and the information is there."
